UFC 101: Silva vs Griffin

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

The hot news around the cage these days is that Anderson Silva is slated to fight Forrest Griffin in UFC 101, on Saturday August 8th in Philidelphia. It appears this is an effort to bring a competitor to Silva who is ready to really throw down. In an article written by Kevin Iole of Yahoo!Sports Dana White President of the UFC said: “Forrest loved the idea and said he’d do it right away, and Anderson told me he would fight anyone I wanted him to fight, no matter who it is. . . so we got the deal.”

“It’s a great fight for him and he’s anxious and excited about it,” Soares said. “Forrest is a bigger, stronger guy with a lot of cardio and he’s the full package. The other thing Anderson likes about it is that Forrest is a big-name with a huge heart and is a fan favorite kind of a guy. That’s the kind of match that makes a legendary kind of a fight and that’s what Anderson wants.”

This makes me think back to the days when Forrest Griffin was a relative nobody, and was fighting Stephen Bonnar in the first Ultimate Fighter.  Griffin won that fight by unanimous decision, becoming the first ultimate fighter.  Because Griffin lost his last bout against Rashad Evans, attempting to defend his light heavyweight belt, he must be looking for some redemption.  The redemption will come with Silva. Silva vs Griffin will be a great fight.  Griffin will force Silva to fight, because he is that type of fighter.  Every fight he is in he pushes the limit.  Previously Griffin has talked about fighting Silva, and here is the video found on CagePotato:
