Jose Canseco Needs to Find a Day Job

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

In an article written by the Associated Press’ Jim Armstrong and found on Google News, Armstrong reports on Jose Canseco’s fight against the Korean giant Hong Man Choi.  Canseco was very unimpressive in I guess what would be called a debut pro fight.   In some ways I can’t believe that anybody even wants to watch Canseco fight, unless it is just to see someone beat the crap out of him.  In the article Armstrong reports that Canseco admitted he “needs the money.”  If you are interested in the video, you can watch it here:

What kind of joke is it when you are so stupid you ruin your career over steroids, drag everybody you know into the mix, spend the enormous amount of money that you made as a pro baseball player, and then make a weak attempt at fighting cause you “need the money.”  In some ways I feel like I shouldn’t even be blogging about this because Canseco is such a fool, and to write about it just gives him more credibility, but it does feel good to verbally abuse him, in some odd way.  What is the saying, “the pen (or keypad in this case) is mightier than the sword.”

One thing that gives me solace is the fact that on May 8, reports were made that Canseco called a press conference to gloat about Manny Ramirez being suspended for 50 games over something that Canseco was probably illegally involved in, and nobody showed up!  Well, I should give him some credit, one reporter did show up.

UFC 98: Hughes vs Serra Promo Video

Monday, May 18th, 2009

There is no love lost between Matt Hughes and Matt Serra. Talk about two guys who like to talk trash about each other. As I have said before, this is like high school where two guys really just despise each other, and decide that they have had enough, and it’s time to show who is best. This is going to be a great fight!

Although I think that Serra (16-5-0) is a good fighter, especially to get in the UFC where he is at, and to have fought some of the best fighters in the world, I don’t think he is of the caliber of Matt Hughes. How is it said, “you are not the champion, until you are able to defend the belt.” Serra was never able to defend the belt.

Hughes has a phenomenal record (43-7-0), has competed at the very top levels in wrestling and MMA, and was able to hold the belt for more than one fight, against tight competition. This video shows the bad blood, and although Serra makes attempts to show that Hughes is arrogant and cocky, the same could easily be said of Serra. Isn’t that part of the fight game, the mind tricks and the arrogance prior to a fight.

Dana White on ESPN

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

I have been seeing some posts about Dana White, and if he can take the UFC, and MMA to the next level. This is a video I found on ESPN which shows some of the history of Dana White, and how he got the UFC to where it is today.  This shows what White has done for MMA, and also some of the controversy that surrounds who he is.  For a guy with “barely a high school education,” he has done a good job of promoting the sport to what it is today.

Great Backfist, Bellator VI

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

This is a great spinning backfist I found on the MMA Mania. Yahir Reyes lands this great backfist, at Bellator IV, knocking out Estevan Payan about 40 seconds into the fight.

UFC 98 Preview

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Here is a video I found on YouTube with a preview of UFC 98, Rashad Evans vs Lyoto Machida. The fight is May 23 in Las Vegas. It is going to be a great fight, and my money is on “The Dragon.” It’s not that I don’t think that Evans is a good fighter, of course he is, but I think Machida has got a strange style in the MMA world, and that will translate to Evans having trouble in the cage because of his odd style.

Lyoto Machida Highlights Video

Friday, May 8th, 2009

I found this highlight reel of Lyoto Machida and his fights on Cage Potato. I think one of the reasons that Machida is so successful, is that his fighting style is so different than many of the other MMA fighters that step into the ring.  He is a Karate Fighter, but as you look at this video which shows some of his training, you see that he trains other aspects too, specifically, throws and groundwork.  The video is definitely worth watching.

Fedor Emilianenko is one of those guys that if you met him on the street, although a good sized guy, is pretty unassuming. He is does not look like he is cut from granite, but when you watch this video I found on MMA Scraps, you too will wonder if Fedor is the greatest fighter ever. He is lightning fast, has a good standup game, and his ground game is incredible. Check it out:

Kyle Maynard: All three Rounds

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Yesterday, I posted round one of Kyle Maynard’s fight against Bryan Fry in Auburn Alabama, Saturday night. I just found the other two rounds on mmaconvert.com. Unfortunately, the reports are correct that the other two rounds are similar to the first. Watching the whole fight, Maynard is really at a distance disadvantage.  I have seen Maynard wrestle, and although wrestling is a very effective MMA technique, wrestling requires both competitors to make contact with each other, and perform throws or take downs, ultimately working to the mat.  It’s obvious in the fight, the Fry was keeping Maynard at a distance, and would not let Maynard come in on him for any type of take down. In the third round Maynard attempts to change his strategy by rolling to his back, attempting to draw Fry into his guard.  Again the distance issue was too great, and Fry was able to continue to punch and push Maynard off, continuing to dominate the fight.

It is obvious he like to compete, but there are other ways to compete for Maynard which would not put him at such a disadvantage.  He could compete in Jiu Jitsu tournaments, or other grappling tournaments, where the distance of the arms and legs do not allow his opponent to dominate the match.  My hat off to Maynard for stepping into the ring, but if he is going to continue, he has a long way to go.  (I have posted round one again, so viewers don’t have to go to a previous post.

Kyle Maynard: First MMA Fight

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Kyle Maynard had his first fight in Auburn Alabama, Saturday night.   Based on an article written by Bloody Elbow, Maynard was not able to wear gloves, and therefore was forbidden to throw any punches.  This is round 1 of the fight, found on YouTube.  Not very impressive fight from Maynard’s side.  I have read on other posts that the other two rounds were very similar to the first.

Although I applaud Maynard for stepping into the ring, based on what I saw in the first round, I am not convinced he should be an MMA fighter.  His opponent, Bryan Fry, effectively was able to keep Maynard from taking him down by throwing punches at his face and backing away when Maynard would come in for a takedown.  In the end it was a unanimous decision loss for Maynard.
