MMA Fighter Dies After Fight

Thursday, July 1st, 2010
I have to admit I love all sports. Everything from MMA to bowling. I haven’t always felt this way but as I age and become slower, I seem to appreciate any athletic ability, even if it is throwing a ball down a lane.

However, when it comes to Mixed Martial Arts there is a large attraction for me. Even though it is a bloody aggressive sport, and people get hurt. There seems to be enough drama with the creation of the Ultimate Fighter and the dedication it takes to step in the octagon.

I also know it is not for everyone! I read somewhere that the attraction is waining a little bit even with the explosion of the UFC. I don’t see the sport leaving prime time any time soon, but I don’t see it lasting any longer than the poker craze did. But who knows it might just replace WWE?

However recently the sport suffered a blow when a tragic death occurred. Michael Kirkham is the second fighter to die from injuries sustained in mixed martial arts competition in North America.

I want to start by sending my sympathy to the family and have zero desire to make light of what happened. There is nothing that can replace someones life and it is a tragedy when it is cut short by a sport.

What I do want to explore is if this death is going to effect MMA in anyway. I wonder what the backlash will be for those who hate the sport or even for those who love the sport. Will this mans death effect it in either way.

I understand that this sport carries an enormous risk! But I also understand that these guys train like crazy and know what they are doing. They have strong camps that teach these guys how to fight and avoid injury as much as you can in a fighting sport.

The sport has improved in its safety and officiating, just compare matches from five years ago to those you see today, you will immediately notice all the changes.

However, that does not help this situation. The sport is fought in a cage and filled with cheers from every hit that lands on someones face and we love to watch the knock outs.

So I wonder, with perhaps the first death in MMA fighting in North America, will the sport suffer and take a hit, or will it continue on without any recourse? What do you think?

Great Backfist, Bellator VI

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

This is a great spinning backfist I found on the MMA Mania. Yahir Reyes lands this great backfist, at Bellator IV, knocking out Estevan Payan about 40 seconds into the fight.

I Won’t Back Down

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

I found this video on a real estate blog that I look at from time to time. It is Pearl Jam, “I Won’t Back Down” at the Gorge in 2006. I thought this was what MMA is all about.

I found this picture on joemonster.org.  There are some pretty funny pictures there.  I hate to say it Tito, but there is a resemblance.

Becoming A MMA Trainer

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

If your are fitness and mixed martial arts buff that drives everyone around them crazy with there endless chatter about fitness and MMA.  Do you have the skills and desire to be involved in mixed martial arts, but are not sure you want to be a professional fighter.  If this is the case then now would be a good time to consider becoming a fitness trainer. Here’s how to do just that. For more information visit Corporate Fitness

1. Do you have what it takes? As a mma fitness trainer there are plenty of skills you need besides enthusiasm. You need to be able analyze situations, be patient, be persistent but nurturing, be organized, be a good listener, and be a good motivator. You need to love to work with people of all ages and all backgrounds that share the common goal of wanting to become fit. And of course you should practice what you preach and be fully involved in fitness, a healthy lifestyle and mma.

2. Get Certified: There are all kinds of fitness certification programs that you can branch into. It also depends where you want to work. The common fitness trainer certifications are ISSA, NEPT, NCSF, ACSM, and ACE. Length of program for each certification varies.

3. Specialize: There is no requirement to specialize, however when you do you open up other employment opportunities. You can also charge more when you have specialized. You can decide to take it right away when you get certified as a fitness trainer or you can go back and get it later.

4. Work It At The Club: Grab your telephone book and have a look at clubs that are listed in the area you are willing to work. Then contact them to see if they are looking for a fitness trainer. If they indicate they might be then it’s a good idea to go drop off a resume. Working at a club will also give you the experience necessary to move into training fighters.

5. Open Up Your Own Fitness Trainer Service: When you run your own business you get back what you put into it. You’ll need to check with your local area to see what type of licensing you require.

6. Sell Yourself: Once you get your business set up and running then it’s time to get out there and market your business and in order to market your business you need to first sell yourself. If you aren’t sure how to do this have a look online about marketing your business. For more information refer to Corporate Fitness Washington

7. Continuing Education:  Leaves you with new skills and very smart accomplishments that will certainly help you keep the job you have or get a new one.

8.  Become Indispensable: When you finally land that job make sure that you become indispensable to the person who has hired you. Be better than the rest. When your client feels they can’t live without your help you’ve got yourself a long term client.

Being a fitness trainer will be very rewarding. You’ve got all thee excellent skills that you can use to help others become fit, loose weight, tone up, and just become more comfortable with their bodies.

Koscheck Stoppage

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

I keep seeing stuff on different blogs like MMABlips, Bloody Elbow, and Cagepotato about the Josh Koscheck Paulo Thiago stoppage due to knockout.  Evidently Koscheck is upset that the Ref, Steve Mazzagatti, stopped the fight because he was not knocked out, and he wanted the time to prove that he could have gotten back in control of himself.  Cagepotato has the best article about this: The Only Rule You’ll Ever Need to Determine Whether a Fight Was Stopped Too Early.

It’s hard to find good video about this fight (I suspect because the UFC holds the video close to the vest), but there is a small snippet on cagepotato showing the knockout.  I have to admit that when Koscheck goes down it looks like he is getting ready to stave off an attack, but when Mazzagatti stops the fight, and pulls on his arm, Koscheck does look like he is in la la land.   I am going to have to agree with cagepotato that Koscheck was out when Mazzagatti stopped the fight.  Have a look at the snippet on cagepotato here.

You can see Koschecks response to the stoppage here.
