UFC 96 Carwin vs Gonzaga
Saturday night was a great night of fights for the UFC. One of the best (although short) was the fight between Gabriel Ganzaga and Shane Carwin. I love the heavyweight fights, and this was no exception. You can tell that Ganzaga is a big dude, but when Shane Carwin walked into the ring, he looked like a monster. OK, its true that they weigh practically the same, but Carwin looks like he was chiseled out of rock.
After the fight started, Gonzaga got a good punch in that rocked Carwin, and a takedown which seemed to give him the advantage. This was changed when Carwin pulled Gonzaga into the guard, and then was able to get back to his feet. Keep in mind that Gonzaga is said to have one of the best ground games in MMA, and many say he is the best in the sport at passing the guard. After dancing for no more than 10 to 15 seconds both went in with rights, and Carwin landed a devastating short right hand, on the button that put Gonzaga out. The rest of the punches were just used to seal the deal.
This fight is a testament as to the staying power of Shane Carwin, and his ability to fight in the top levels of MMA. Carwin is now 11-0-0 in his professional career, and is a staying force in the heavyweight division. I am waiting for the Carwin vs Lesnar fight. Saturday, they were saying that Carwin is the only guy that has larger hands than Brock Lesnar. They had to have special gloves made for him to fight. It will be great to see those two with the canned hams slugging away at each other.
