Bob Reilly Needs to find a Better Agenda

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Bob Reilly New York State Assemblyman

There must be an election coming up because Bob Reilly seems to be pulling out all of the stops to make sure that he does everything possible to make sure Mixed Martial Arts does not come to New York.  Bloody Elbow quotes Reilly as saying:

“There is overwhelming, widespread opposition to [MMA],” Reilly says. “Many of my constituents come up to say, ‘You’re doing the right thing. How can we have this?’ It’s a violent sport that is harmful and damaging. Violence begets violence. It helps create a culture in our society of domestic violence, of bullying, of violence against gays, of illegal gun use. It’s the job of state legislatures to pass laws against that sort of stuff, and then we put something like ultimate fighting as our form of entertainment?”

Reilly has made weak comparisons to violence begetting violence and MMA in the past, and he continues to do so.  In an article written by Ben Fowlkes for Sports Illustrated Fowlkes asks Reilly, “…harming your opponent to the point of unconsciousness is one of the ways you win a boxing match, isn’t it?”  Reilly’s reply is, “It’s not a stated goal, though.”

Again, I repeat from a previous post, one of boxing’s stated goals is harming your opponent to the point of unconciousness.  I am not understanding how Mixed Martial Arts has anything to do with domestic violence, bullying, violence against gays, or illegal gun use.  This guy is a joke.  He must have a weak agenda because he can’t find anything better to fight for.

Lyoto Machida

Monday, May 18th, 2009

As many may know, Lyoto Machida was trained in Bushido Karate by his father, a native of Japan, who migrated to Brazil as a young man. Lyoto was raised in a dojo, and here is a video showing a short history of his father, and Lyoto’s motivation for UFC 98, and martial arts. This is a video I found on Fight Ticker:

Great Backfist, Bellator VI

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

This is a great spinning backfist I found on the MMA Mania. Yahir Reyes lands this great backfist, at Bellator IV, knocking out Estevan Payan about 40 seconds into the fight.

UFC 98 Preview

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Here is a video I found on YouTube with a preview of UFC 98, Rashad Evans vs Lyoto Machida. The fight is May 23 in Las Vegas. It is going to be a great fight, and my money is on “The Dragon.” It’s not that I don’t think that Evans is a good fighter, of course he is, but I think Machida has got a strange style in the MMA world, and that will translate to Evans having trouble in the cage because of his odd style.

UFC 101: Silva vs Griffin

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

The hot news around the cage these days is that Anderson Silva is slated to fight Forrest Griffin in UFC 101, on Saturday August 8th in Philidelphia. It appears this is an effort to bring a competitor to Silva who is ready to really throw down. In an article written by Kevin Iole of Yahoo!Sports Dana White President of the UFC said: “Forrest loved the idea and said he’d do it right away, and Anderson told me he would fight anyone I wanted him to fight, no matter who it is. . . so we got the deal.”

“It’s a great fight for him and he’s anxious and excited about it,” Soares said. “Forrest is a bigger, stronger guy with a lot of cardio and he’s the full package. The other thing Anderson likes about it is that Forrest is a big-name with a huge heart and is a fan favorite kind of a guy. That’s the kind of match that makes a legendary kind of a fight and that’s what Anderson wants.”

This makes me think back to the days when Forrest Griffin was a relative nobody, and was fighting Stephen Bonnar in the first Ultimate Fighter.  Griffin won that fight by unanimous decision, becoming the first ultimate fighter.  Because Griffin lost his last bout against Rashad Evans, attempting to defend his light heavyweight belt, he must be looking for some redemption.  The redemption will come with Silva. Silva vs Griffin will be a great fight.  Griffin will force Silva to fight, because he is that type of fighter.  Every fight he is in he pushes the limit.  Previously Griffin has talked about fighting Silva, and here is the video found on CagePotato:

Kyle Maynard: “Disabled” Mixed Martial Artist

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

I have to admit that when I saw the announcement that Kyle Maynard, a congenital amputee, was going to fight in MMA, I thought it was rediculous.  I saw this guy a couple of years ago on one of the main stream news programs (20/20, Primetime, I can’t remember which one) and was impressed at the time that he was able to compete in wrestling.

Today, I just read this article in the USA Today which shows Maynard is going to compete in Alabama in an MMA Fight, and that he was not able to get sanctioned in Georgia (where he is from) because of his “disability.”  I put disability in quotes because if you watch the video below, which I also got from USA Today’s website, Maynard has no problem defending himself in a Jiu-Jitsu match.  In fact, it appears that his lack of arms and legs may be an advantage.  I train in MMA, specifically Judo now, and have trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and whenever someone I am training with has a different or odd style of fighting, it becomes a challenge for me.  Based on this video, Maynard may have something going here.  I question how he is going to strike his opponent, but maybe that is part of the strategy.  To Maynard, I say “good luck on your fight.”  I look forward to seeing what the outcome is.

I Won’t Back Down

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

I found this video on a real estate blog that I look at from time to time. It is Pearl Jam, “I Won’t Back Down” at the Gorge in 2006. I thought this was what MMA is all about.

Inside MMA Gonzaga Carwin Interview on HD Net

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Inside MMA did an interview with Gabrel Gonzaga and Shane Carwin which ended up being a good interview.  Typically, when fighters are interviewed, there is a great amount of trash talk, although typically, they are not on the same interview.  This is an interesting interview because Gonzaga and Carwin are both involved.  At one point Ron Kruck asks the two of them what the others strengths are.  I was impressed that they had clean answers for Kruck and were complementary of the strengths of their opponent.

Gonzaga is 10 -3-0 and Carwin is 10-0-0 in their professional fights.  As stated in the interview, neither one has gotten out of the first round in their last two fights.  This looks to be a good fight.

Check out the interview here:

“How Not to Fight” by Scott “Lionheart” Blevins

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

I just saw on MMALinker three videos about Scott “Lionheart” Blevins.  These videos should be the beginning of “How not to Fight” by Scott “Lionheart” Blevins.  This guy is great, well, at covering his head.  Take a look at this:

I like how Blevins comes out at the beginning of the fight, puts his hand up to shake with his opponent, Zach Jenkins, then tries to sucker punch him.  I tend not to get down on fighters that are willing to get into the ring (octagon, cage, whatever…) and throw down with someone, but who is this guy?  I can’t believe he even gets fights.  But wait, if he is willing to take a beating so that someone can add a notch to their belt, more power to him.  There are two other good ones to watch on MMALinker

Check out this video from MySpace:

Look at the chain he is wearing around his neck.  If Rampage at 205 gets to wear the full size chain around his neck, is that the size of chain you get when you weigh a buck and a quarter.  I think he cut that off the chandelier in his kitchen.

To end it all, you have to check out the interview Cagepotato did with “Lionheart.”

Keep covering that head Lionheart.
